Great Exercises for Long Road Trips
You’ve decided to invest some time in the great American road trip for 2021. As you gather your supplies, don’t forget about having a few healthy snacks and beverages in there between the candy bars and energy drinks.
Since you’ll be riding in the car for a long time each day, it helps to have some exercises to do. Here are some of the movements to try so that you can feel better upon arrival.
What Are the Best Exercises to Do on a Road Trip?
1. Seated Side Bends
Sit tall in your seat for this exercise. Keep your hands behind your heads with fingers clasped. As your spine stays straight, slowly bend to the left without interfering with the driver. Repeat in the other direction. When you get to the deepest place of the stretch, try to hold it there for a few seconds.
2. Calf Raises
With your feet flat on the floor, raise your heels high. Put all the weight you can on the balls of each foot while contracting the calves. Adding a tennis ball under the foot will increase your range of motion for this activity.
3. Seat Pushes
If you are driving in the car, this exercise can help with your triceps. Hold the wheel at the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions, gripping it tightly while keeping the elbows loose. Straighten your arms and push against the wheel, driving your back into the seat.
When you stop at a rest area, doing some lunges can boost your metabolism and work on your strength. The trick to a successful exercise is to keep your core tight. Step forward with your left leg, shift your weight so that the heel hits the floor, and lower your body until the thigh is parallel to the ground. Return to the starting position and repeat with the other leg.
When you have these exercises in mind for a long road trip, you can maintain your fitness while being more sedentary. It takes a little practice, but it is worth the effort!
